Before choosing a surfacing material, it helps to step back and ask a few practical questions first. The answers often shape the project more than the material itself.

For schools, preschools, parks, HOAs, faith-based organizations, and community spaces across Southern California, thoughtful planning early on can help avoid surprises later and lead to a surface that works better long-term for both users and maintenance teams.

What Is Happening With the Existing Surface?

Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF)

Regular raking, leveling, and periodic top-offs are needed to maintain proper depth and accessibility, especially in high-traffic areas like swings and slide exits.

Rubber Mulch

Rubber mulch offers softer impact attenuation and does not decompose like wood fiber, but it is still a loose-fill system that can shift or spread over time.

Poured-in-Place Rubber (PIP)

Poured-in-place rubber creates a seamless, unitary surface that supports accessibility and requires less daily maintenance than loose-fill materials. It is often selected for schools and public-facing spaces where ADA access and a clean appearance are priorities.

PIP also allows for custom colors, graphics, logos, and themed designs that can help create a more visually integrated play space.

However, PIP does have a higher upfront investment, and long-term performance depends heavily on proper base preparation, drainage, installation quality, and ongoing maintenance over time.

Routine maintenance may include cleaning, inspections, recoating, or top-layer replacement in high-use areas. In some cases, resurfacing the top wear layer can help extend the life of the system when the underlying cushion layer is still in good condition.

Synthetic Turf

Synthetic turf systems are commonly used in playgrounds and outdoor spaces because they provide a more uniform, natural-looking appearance and work well in multi-use environments.

Turf systems still require maintenance, including grooming, brushing, and infill management over time.

High-use areas under swings, slide exits, and entry points tend to wear faster regardless of material. Wear mats, reinforced wear zones, and routine maintenance can help extend surface life in these areas.

Loose-Fill vs. Unitary Surfacing

Most playground surfacing options fall into two general categories.

Unitary Surfacing

Examples include:

  • poured-in-place rubber
  • synthetic turf systems
  • rubber tiles

These systems are less likely to shift or displace during daily use and are often easier for accessibility, but they typically involve higher installation costs and more extensive base preparation.

Unitary systems still require defined edges and transitions, but they are generally easier to contain and maintain over time.

Other surfacing types exist, including bonded rubber systems, but most playground projects today are evaluating a few core options based on maintenance expectations, accessibility goals, aesthetics, and budget.

Is This a Repair, Refresh, or Full Replacement?

Not every surfacing issue automatically means starting over.

In some situations:

  • loose-fill materials simply need replenishment
  • drainage corrections may improve performance
  • patch repairs can address isolated PIP damage
